stitchu / sewing order / Hem last
Hem last, phase 9 of 9.
Try on, mark, hem; a half-circle hangs 24 h first so the bias drops.
Build flat for as long as you can: every seam is easier to sew and press while the piece is still open. Close it into a tube (side seams, sleeves) only near the end.
Selected reference steps, grouped by garment, not a complete sewing sequence. Labels name the design choices each step applies to. Follow the full sewing guide supplied with your chosen pattern. Patterns and their sewing guides.
Dress
- Half-circle skirt: Let the dress hang for 24 hours before hemming, bias areas drop. Then trim even and hem narrow.
- Skirt other than half-circle: Try it on, then hem with a 2 cm double fold.
Top
- Hem with a 2 cm double fold.
Skirt
- A-line or straight skirt: Try it on. Adjust side seams if needed, then finish the hem with a 2 cm double-fold.
- Gathered skirt: Hem with a 2 cm double-fold.
- Pleated skirt: Hem with a 2 cm double-fold, then press the pleat creases again from hip to hem if you want sharp pleats all the way down.
- Half-circle skirt: IMPORTANT: let the skirt hang for 24 hours before hemming, bias-cut areas drop, then trim the hem even and finish with a narrow 1 cm hem.
